VIDEO – Ermelo crash raises alarm over road markings and obstructive parked vehicles

Worn road markings and obscured stop sign raises concern after two vehicles collide at a dangerous intersection.

ERMELO – A collision involving a car and a bakkie occurred earlier today at the intersection of Macdonald and Van Riebeeck streets in Ermelo.

Emergency services responded swiftly, with Sesha and Ermelo Towing Services, Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue, local police, and traffic officials all on the scene.

A white car with a heavily damaged front end is at the center of an intersection, surrounded by emergency personnel and bystanders. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, although both vehicles sustained damage in the incident.

Bystanders at the scene voiced concern about the faded road markings, particularly the worn stop street lines, which they say may play a role.

Although a stop sign is in place at the intersection, some motorists claim it is partially obscured by several broken-down taxis parked on the side of the road nearby.

Highvelder drove up to the intersection and observed that this was indeed plausible. The stop sign only becomes clearly visible once a driver is virtually at the intersection.

A line of white minibus taxis is parked along the side of a paved road under a clear blue sky. The road stretches into the distance, with trees and buildings visible on the right.

At a speed of 60 km/h, this could leave a motorist with little time to brake, increasing the risk of a collision.

Motorists are urged to approach the intersection with caution while road markings are unclear.
