Municipality launches action committee to combat drug abuse
The committee’s aim is to improve co-operation, raise awareness, provide support and expand access to treatment.
ERMELO – The Msukaligwa Local Municipality has launched a new initiative to combat the town’s pervasive drug problem, by establishing a Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC).
The municipality held its first LDAC meeting at the council chamber on Wednesday, September 17.
Acting on behalf of the executive mayor, Cllr Ernest Ngovene chaired the gathering, where representatives from SAPS, community leaders, health and social development officials, and local organisations were appointed to serve on the committee.

The committee was formed to strengthen collaboration in tackling substance abuse. Its aim is to improve co-operation, raise awareness, provide support and expand access to treatment.
While the move is a welcome sign of proactive governance, doubts remain about its real impact in a community struggling with widespread substance abuse.
Highvelder put a series of questions to municipal spokesperson Mandla Zwane, asking how the LDAC’s plans will translate into tangible results.

The newspaper sought clarity on strategies, evidence that a committee can be effective, and the committee’s immediate priorities in its first six months.
Further questions centred on the budget: how much has been allocated and how the funds will be used beyond administrative costs.
The newspaper also asked what measures are planned to tackle drug dealers and distribution networks, not just users, and awaits the municipality’s response.
