Municipality visits local school for tree-planting initiative
This initiative was one of many planned activities that will take place at various schools across the MLM throughout September.
ERMELO – The Msukaligwa Local Municipality (MLM) kicked off its Arbor Month activities with an informative tree-planting ceremony at the New Ermelo Primary School on September 16.
The event, informed by the isiZulu proverb ‘ligotshwa lisasemanzi’ (which means to guide or shape a tree while it is still young and pliable), focused on teaching young learners about the importance of environmental conservation.
The programme was a collaborative initiative, uniting the municipality’s environmental office with partners such as the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment; the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs; Eskom; KM Waste Management; and the Gert Sibande District Municipality.

Cllr Ernest Ngovene, the MMC for community and social services, was joined by Cllr PH Sibiya of Ward 16, learners and faculty in planting the trees.
“The event focused on raising awareness about the importance of trees, biodiversity preservation and environmental protection,” said Mandla Zwane, spokesperson of the MLM.
This initiative was one of many planned activities that will take place at various schools across the MLM throughout September.
The aim is to ensure the message of environmental care reaches as many learners as possible.
