Prior to the police’s arrival, protesters spoke to the Highvelder — accompanied by Highveld Security Services — expressing frustration with the Msukaligwa Municipality over ongoing electricity and water supply issues in Cwebezela Extension 6 and Extension 11.

According to one of the residents, they have been without consistent electricity for the past three weeks.

“We have spoken to the municipality and nothing has happened. They just tell us the cables get stolen,” the resident said.

The group also alleged that municipal water tankers deliver dirty water unfit for human consumption, forcing them to buy clean water at R40 per container.

Protesters insisted their demonstration was peaceful and denied throwing stones at passing vehicles.

“We just want the municipality to listen to us and give us electricity and water,” one protester said.

Roshan Singh, Assistant Director for Safety and Security Liaison at the Road Incident Management System (RIMS), confirmed that he was first on the scene and immediately notified the police about the road closure.

“Police worked swiftly to disperse the crowd and clear the road for traffic to flow,” Singh said.

Although traffic has since been reopened, the situation remains tense.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling through the area.
