Highvelder journalist “arrested” – blood donations needed for “bail”

The SANBS Jail and Bail initiative brought excitement as a Highvelder journalist was escorted from the office to the Merino Mall holding cell.

René Joubert, one of our own Highvelder reporters, was “arrested” this morning at the offices as part of the South African National Blood Service’s (SANBS) annual Jail & Bail initiative hosted by the Kare Bearz in partnership with local SAPS and the SANBS.

What started as mild panic quickly turned into fits of laughter when Highvelder editor Wayne van der Walt neglected to warn the rest of the staff and decided to let them figure out the surprise on their own.

Armed with handcuffs, mock warrants, and the kind of confidence usually reserved for soap-opera villains, SAPS officers stormed the building.

Their target? Joubert, diligently working when the officers pounced.

Adding to the spectacle, they parked three of their vehicles in the Highvelder parking area, effectively blocking off the scene and lending the staged arrest a thrilling sense of realism.

Within moments, Joubert was marched out of the office — loudly protesting innocence — while colleagues documented the entire operation like true members of the press. (Her colleagues offered to help carry her away.)

The mock prisoner was transported straight to SANBS’s temporary “holding cell,” set up in the parking lot at Merino Mall, where they will remain until enough “bail money”, in the form of blood donations and support, is raised to secure release.

The fun and seamless execution of the Jail & Bail event is entirely thanks to Kare Bearz, who host this initiative annually. Their dedication not only make the event enjoyable for participants and spectators alike but also helps shine a spotlight on the critical need for blood donations in the community.

SANBS uses this initiative to raise awareness, encourage donations, and inject a little humour into a lifesaving cause.

Back at the Highvelder offices, staff members were already debating whether to pay for their colleague’s release or leave them to “cool off” until deadlines demanded their return.

Meanwhile, Joubert managed to send a brief message from behind bars: “Tell my family… I’m being treated well. And please bring snacks.”

The Jail & Bail drive continues throughout the day, and supporters are encouraged to swing by Merino Mall’s parking area, donate blood, and help free the newsroom’s newest convict — or simply come laugh at their misfortune.
