One dead, one injured in early morning crash on Piet Retief Road near Ermelo

One person died and another was taken to hospital following an early morning crash about 10km outside Ermelo on the Piet Retief Road.

ERMELO – One person has died and another sustained injuries following a motor vehicle accident on the Piet Retief Road earlier this morning.

A bakkie and a truck were involved.

Emergency services received a call reporting the crash at approximately 04:31.

The accident occurred about 10km outside Ermelo.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found that one person from the bakkie had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene.

The driver of the truck was injured and transported to the hospital for further medical treatment.

Traffic authorities, Star of Life, local police, the Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue Services, towing services and paramedics of the Mpumalanga Provincial Ambulance Services responded to the scene.

Traffic is currently moving slowly, with one lane closed to allow emergency crews to clear the scene. Motorists are advised to approach the area with caution.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.
