Step up this Easter and let your blood do the talking
Each blood donation takes just 30 minutes yet can save multiple lives of people during this Easter holiday.
NATIONAL – While many South Africans will travel or spend time with family this Easter, hospitals continue to treat trauma patients, perform surgeries, and care for those undergoing cancer treatment or managing chronic illnesses. A reliable blood supply is critical for all these patients.
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is urging the nation to “Answer the Call” on Saturday, March 28, with a target of collecting 6 000 units of blood in a single day.
Each donation takes just 30 minutes but can save up to three lives.
For mothers like Lezhanne Hartwell, blood donors were a lifeline. Her 18-month-old daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma in October 2020 and needed a blood transfusion soon after.
She received 200 ml of blood at Donald Gordon Hospital, a donation that was critical to her survival.
“I would like to thank all blood donors because of your generosity, you have contributed to saving our little girl’s life,” Hartwell said.
The experience changed her perspective on blood donation, and she now donates regularly despite previously being afraid of needles.
Young donors are also stepping up. Sibongeleni Hlongwane (23), from Pietermaritzburg, began donating at 17 while still in school and continues as a way of giving back to society.
“Donating blood is a meaningful way to help others,” he said. “I encourage more young people to get involved and participate in community blood drives.”
Monique Schreiner, SANBS senior manager: donor relations, stresses the importance of donations during Easter.
“Easter is a time associated with giving and renewal. By donating blood, South Africans can give a gift that lasts far beyond the holiday, the gift of life.”
The SANBS encourages both first-time and regular donors to visit the nearest donor centre or mobile clinic on March 28. In Ermelo, residents can donate at the SANBS mobile unit parked at the Merino Mall parking area.
