Alleged Davel assault: educator not suspended during investigation
A learner assault probe in Davel is nearing completion, but the accused teacher is still at school, the department confirms.
DAVEL – The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that a teacher accused of assaulting a 13-year-old learner at Davel Combined School has not been suspended and remains at the school while the investigation continues.
The matter, which has drawn community concern, is currently at an advanced stage, according to national spokesperson Jasper Zwane.
The department stated that there is no indication that the educator’s presence at the school could interfere with the process.
“The educator has been serving at Davel since 2017, when she was promoted to departmental head, and has no prior recorded complaints,” Zwane said.
The allegations involve a learner who reportedly suffered facial swelling and lost a tooth after being taken out of class and allegedly assaulted in an area without surveillance cameras.

“The learner involved is receiving the necessary psychosocial support to safeguard their wellbeing,” the department said in a response to Highvelder’s media enquiries.
While internal disciplinary processes are underway, the department confirmed that cases involving assault are also referred to police, with criminal and departmental processes running independently.
