Four women killed in horrific R23 crash near Volksrust and Perdekop

Emergency services rushed multiple injured victims to hospital after a deadly collision on the busy R23 route.

VOLKSRUST – Four women died in a head-on collision between a sedan and a truck on the R23 between Volksrust and Perdekop on April 23.

Police indicated four other people sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.

The injured include the sedan driver and three passengers who were also in the sedan, while the truck driver suffered slight injuries.

Emergency services transported the injured to a hospital in Standerton for treatment.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash and said reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out.

Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison Jackie Macie urged motorists to obey the rules of the road and drive responsibly.

The R23 is a busy provincial route that has been the scene of several serious accidents in the past.
