Wesselton Karate Club hauls in medals at the ninth Gojuriya Kai Karate Championship

Karatekas from the Wesselton Karate Club received numerous medals when they participated in the ninth Gojuriya Kai Karate Championship at the Emalahleni Correctional Services recently.

The six karatekas returned home with 14 medals in their first ever karate tournament.

Sihle Nkosi (U/13) obtained silver in Kata and bronze in Kumite, while Lihle Nkosi (U/14) got two silver medals in Kata and fighting.

Nombuso Matona (U/11) was the only one who got gold in the Kata and a silver in Kumite.

Her sister, Relebohile Matona (U/11), received silver medals in both categories.

Tumelo Dube (U/13) obtained silver in Kumite and Kata, and Siyamthanda Msibi (U/13) took home a bronze medal.

The karate club is still in its infancy and opened in January. Sensei Nsizwa Wellington Thanjekwayo is at the helm.

They currently use the Cassim Park Community Hall for practice and hope to move to their own dojo in the near future.

The team will compete in various tournaments in Pretoria, Standerton and Stellenbosch, among others.
