Lovedale Basketball Tournament brings action at the Ermelo Sports Inn

The Soldiers basketball club from Pretoria were crowned champions on Sunday, 25 November, receiving gold medals bought by founder, Ms MKhwanazi.

The second annual Lovedale Basketball Tournament took place at Ermelo Sports Inn recently.

Six teams took part in this year’s competition with players coming from as far as KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

The teams brought end-to-end action to the delight of spectators as they vied for the number one spot.

Ms Mandisa Lovedale Mkhwanazi founded the tournament with the aim of reviving basketball as a sport and encouraging local players to play and grow the game.

Ms Mkhwanazi brought her vision to life last year, inviting teams from all over the Msukaligwa area to participate.

Her initial vision to hold the tournament annually and expand it to a weekend was realised this year as the tournament resulted in a two-day affair.

Funded from her own pocket, Ms Mkhwanazi hopes the tournament will be in future hosted in various towns around the Gert Sibande District and not just Ermelo.

The Soldiers Basketball Club from Pretoria were crowned champions on Sunday, 25 November, receiving gold medals.

The Chosen Few from Breyten took the second spot and silver medals, while the Spinners from Witbank walked away with bronze.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament was awarded to Daten Date from the Soldiers team.

The Lovedale Basketball tournament will again take place next year during November.
