Pinetown community rallies to create awareness against crime

"It is vital that we all take a collective responsibility in tackling crime and abuse against the vunerable groups in our society," councillor Tim Brauteseth.

PINETOWN Community Policing Forum recently conducted an crime awareness tour through the Pinetown precinct area in a full show of force and in solidarity with the women in the community.

The tour made it’s way through the Pinetown central business district, Mariannhill, Nazareth and Kloof.

According to Const. Lungile Mbatha, the Pinetown SAPS, Metro Police, CPF’s, security companies, Open Door Crisis Centre and the local councillors joined forces on Saturday 17 August to hand out the awareness pamphlets against crime, substance abuse, women and child abuse in commemoration of women’s month.

“Taxi ranks and shopping malls were the most targeted areas as most of the crime happens there and most of the criminals hide in taxi ranks. People were also urged to report crime and also be alert against criminals at all time,” said Mbatha.

Ward councillor Tim Brauteseth and councillor Neli Nyanisa also supported the campaign. Brauteseth said he was impressed with the result.

“It was indeed a fine sight to see all the crime prevention agencies and private individuals engaging with the public in a constructive manner. It is vital that we all take a collective responsibility in tackling crime and abuse against the vulnerable groups in our society,” he said.

Brauteseth also expressed pride and appreciation to the members of the SAPS and CPF for the time taken in putting the event together.

Pinetown SAPS urged the community to read this pamphlet as the focus was on awareness of women and children’s rights and also provided useful crime hints for local residents.

The main event was sponsored by Moova’s Salon in Pinetown.
