
FOUR men were arrested for possession of unlicensed guns and ammunition in Mpumalanga township.
According to Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Lt Bongumusa Manqele, a joint operation by Pinetown Cluster and Pietermaritzburg Cluster Tactical Response teams led to the arrest of three men who were on their way home from a funeral at Mophela near Mpumalanga township.
Two guns, a revolver and seven rounds of ammunition were seized from them. Following up on information, the teams proceeded to Mpumalanga township where they found another man in possession of an unlicensed pistol with two live rounds.
“He was also arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Two of the recovered firearms were reported stolen in Durban in December 2003 and August this year.
“All recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to determine whether they were used in any crime in the country.
The suspects appeared in the Mpumalanga Magistrate’s Court and were granted bail of R1500 each. They are due back in court on 22 January.
Provincial commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lt General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the arrest and the recovery of unlicensed guns by the members.
She appealed to the public to continue providing the police with information about criminal activities in their areas.
