Pitlochry press club comes out tops

Pitlochry Primary School's won the Youth Press Team category at the recent Apple in Education Awards with their video on pollution.

PITLOCHRY Senior Primary School’s Press Team won first place in the Youth Press Team category at this year’s Apple in Education Awards, which was recently announced at Montecasino in Johannesburg.

There were 23 iSchool Africa Youth Press Teams in South Africa that took part, only two of which were primary schools. Pitlochry School’s press team was the only team from KwaZulu-Natal.

The 23 iSchool Africa Youth Press Team Programme set up press clubs in various schools by providing the schools with Apple technology and encouraged the pupils to use the technology to express themselves regarding various issues that affect them. Pupils were required to produce a video each month for television and online media.

The Pitlochry pupils volunteered their time as the school’s press team to produce the videos. According to Mrs Felicity Cory, the teacher who guided the team, the pupils were very dedicated and never missed one afternoon.

The video that Pitlochry Primary School’s youth press team entered for the Apple in Education Awards looked at the effects of pollution on the planet and what they could do to help save it. Their video was entitled “Solution to Pollution”.

“The aim of the video was to show that as young pupils they might not be able to prevent global warming, but they could curb pollution in their community, by simply throwing rubbish away,” said Cory.
