Councillors gear up to tackle community issues

DA Councillors discuss their agendas for 2014.

WITH the start of the new year ward councillors gave feedback on their 2014 agendas.

Tim Brauteseth of the DA, of Ward 18, said he hoped to tackle the continued fight for a Municipal Court in Pinetown, to serve the inner west region, as well as the restoration of a dedicated Metro Police station in Pinetown to enhance bylaws and traffic enforcement.

“I also hope to continue the rehabilitation of the Pinetown CBD and Lahee Park, and to continue the fight of clearing the overgrown and unsafe bush areas owned by the municipality and government,” said Brauteseth.

The DA’s Rick Crouch, of Ward 10, said that he would be continuing with his campaign against abandoned and neglected buildings and properties in ward 10. “Not only are they an eyesore but they are a haven for criminals who use them to stage robberies in the neighbourhoods where they are located,” said Crouch.

Other issues that Crouch plans to tackle are illegal signage, the proper repair of potholes, illegal constructions, irregular and fraudulent expenditure. He will also be pressuring the Electricity Department to upgrade the sub-stations to alleviate the power outages that are so prevalent in the area.

According to the DA’s Tex Collins, of Ward 9, his top priority is to ensure that the Inanda Road upgrade is completed.

” I also plan to ensure that the Waterfall Library and Waterfall Clinic are upgraded and improved, and that current constructions are completed. The municipality has dragged its heels on these buildings, but have eventually gotten their act together,” said Collins.

He also plans to ensure that the roads that have been showing signs of serious degradation are maintained, and he is also set to pressure the municipality to address the issues regarding abandoned houses and overgrown plots.

“The general upkeep of the ward is also going to be a priority and council will have to be far more active to ensure the standards do not fall. This will be monitored constantly,” he said.
