Policeman survives attack at Pinetown intersection

An off-duty police officer was stabbed at the intersection of Richmond Road and Gillitts Road on Saturday.

A SYDENHAM-based police officer is believed to have been stabbed 10 times during a robbery in Pinetown on Saturday afternoon.

The incident is reported to have occurred at the intersection of Richmond Road and Gillitts Road.

According to reports, the off-duty officer had his window rolled down when he was approached by one of the robbers. The suspect reached into the vehicle, turned off the ignition and made an attempt to take the car keys.

Reports further indicated that another suspect appeared at the window, wielding a knife, which was used to stab the officer 10 times in the back when a brawl between the three men broke out. One of the two suspects gained access to the vehicle and attempted to take the policeman’s gun. With help from a passing motorist the man inside the vehicle was apprehended and arrested, while the other robber fled on foot.

One of the suspects appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on charges of robbery and attempted murder.
