Murder suspects nabbed with unlicensed guns

MEC Mchunu has applauded Mpumalanga police for their hard work after arresting two men wanted for a number of murders.

POLICE have arrested two men who were wanted for a number of murder and attempted murder cases in the Mpumalanga township, outside Harmmersdale.

The hard work of police yielded positive results when they traced and arrested both men in Georgedale. They were found in possession of two unlicensed guns, a 38 revolver with five live rounds and a shotgun which was stolen in the Richards Bay area.

One man was wanted for a double murder and three counts of attempted murder which took place in Georgedale in 2013.

It is alleged that two victims were shot and killed while three were wounded after being shot on 18 December 2013.

The other suspect was wanted for a murder and attempted murder that was reported at Mpongo Road, Woodyglen near Mpumalanga on 22 March 2013 where Constable Siyabonga Mthokozisi Khumalo (25) was shot and kill.

A woman who was with him was wounded during the shooting.

Both men were charged with murder, attempted murder and for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

They will appear in the Mpumalanga Magistrate’s Court soon.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, has applauded the breakthrough made by the police.

“This arrest which comes just days after five people were shot dead in Sankotshe, outside the Mpumalanga township, should send a clear message to the community and criminals that police will leave no stone unturned to find the perpetrators of crime.

“This arrest which was a result of a meticulous investigation goes a long way in underlining the confidence we have in those serving in our SAPS. We are convinced that the police will soon make progress in the latest murders in the township.

“We will be keenly watching the proceedings of these cases through our justice system with the hope that those responsible for terrorising our society would soon face the full might of the law,” he said.

Mchunu also urged people from the community to work hand in hand with the police to nab criminals.
