Neigbourhood watch cleans up

HILLCREST Park Neighbourhood Watch (HPNW) has stepped up to the plate again, this time to clear the area around the Eskom substation, in Chelmsfordville Valley off Springside Road, which has become a dumping ground for rubbish and a perfect spot for vagrants and criminals.
“Dumping and invasive bush remains a problem, with construction material, garden refuse and other rubbish, old carpets, boxes and bags strewn everywhere. Hence the focus of this latest initiative. Local residents have in the past reported noises late at night, and dumping has been confirmed by security guards securing the electrical substation.
“Our special patrols have even removed poaching snares in the area. This all changed when HPNW extended its security patrols into the area and started rehabilitating this naturally beautiful site between Hillcrest Park and Gillitts Park,” said Shaun Lyle, chairman of HPNW.
On Saturday, 25 January, a team set out to further reclaim the road surface from sand and weeds, clear the verges and stack the cuttings. The next stage will be the removal of the last of the rubble and the cuttings. The project is on going.
“We look forward to catching, naming shaming and punishing the dumping perpetrators. Eskom security guards now provide invaluable eyes and ears in the area. Latest reports indicate a dramatic drop in ‘illegal’ traffic in the area. We plan to keep it that way,” said Shaun.
The HPNW encourages residents to get involved in these types of projects and take ownership’ of an area and become involved in HPNW’s organised community work parties.
