Man dies in M19 collision
One man died in an accident involving three cars on the M19, Westville.
A SERIOUS accident involving eight people occurred on the M19 in Westville at approximately 8.45pm on Saturday 8 March.
Ryan Mash, an ER24 advanced life support paramedic who was on scene, reported that an Opel Astra traveling Durban bound drifted into the Pinetown bound lane and collided with a Polo Classic.
A truck swerved to avoid the collision and collided with a tree, knocking the tree over onto Blair Atholl Road. The Fire Department was called to remove the fallen tree.
“Two men were trapped in the Astra, but the passenger died on the scene before we could rescue him from the wreckage. The driver suffered serious head injuries as well as a fractured femur. He was transported to Addington Hospital,” said Mash.
A seven-year old girl from the Polo was found lying on the freeway after the collision. She had suffered a broken femur. Her mother and grandfather were traveling with her in the Polo.
“The mother was treated for burns caused by the vehicle’s airbag and severe shock. The grandfather had sustained broken ribs. They were transported to a nearby hospital,” said Mash.
Three commuters were reportedly traveling in the truck. They suffered only minor injuries and were also transported to a local hospital.
Authorities were on scene and will be investigating the incident.
