MEC condemns mob justice

MEC Mchunu urged people to work hand in hand with the police instead of taking the law into their own hands.

Mob sets fire to Inyanga’s property

MEC for transport, community and safety liason, Willies Mchunu has condemned the violent  action taken by Cleremont community members following rumours that a local man was responsible for the disappearance of two children in the area.

The man’s house and three cars were destroyed in a fire set by a violent mob Saturday 7 June.

MEC Mchunu today noted this incident with concern, warning people not to take law into their own hands as this was a criminal act.

“I am deeply saddened by this kind of behaviour. We urge the community to work within the boundaries of the law and assist us in fighting against crime.”

“It is dangerous to pre-judge this matter and assume that the witch doctor had something to do with the two missing children. Please, let us give police an opportunity to investigate this matter. Ours is to support them. I therefore appeal for calm and restraint on this matter,” said Mchunu.

He also added that the only way to effectively fight crime is when the community works hand in hand with the police and the department’s structures that are on the ground.

Mchunu also extended his heartfelt condolences to both families.
