Motorist injured in M19 accident

Authorities had to use the jaws of life to free a man from the wreckage on Otto Volek, after he lost control of his vehicle.

A MAN in his late 20’s was seriously injured during an accident on the M19 near Otto Volek Road in Pinetown, yesterday.

A report suggested that the driver lost control of his vehicle while travelling along a sharp bend, which caused his vehicle to roll and land on its roof in the centre median.

When paramedics arrived at the scene they found the man trapped in the wreckage. “The paramedics broke one of the vehicle’s windows and had to crawl into the wreckage to stabilise the patient,” said Chris Botha, Netcare 911 spokesman.

Once the man was stabilised the fire department and Netcare 911 Rescue Unit began the painstaking process of cutting an opening from the wreckage to free the man, using the jaws of life. He was later transported to a nearby hospital.
