Riding for a cause at nationals

Riders will get a chance to win for charity.

Riders in the SA national showjumping championships that takes place at the Durban Shongweni Club from Wednesday, 6 August to Sunday, 10 August have the added incentive to win R20 000 to donate to their chosen charity.

The five-day championships is being sponsored by Harcourts Real Estate, who are behind the “Riding for a Cause” initiative that has been introduced this year. Each rider that makes it through to the finals on Sunday has the chance to win the national showjumping title as well as the charity money.

“This concept and opportunity to give back has been well received by all the riders and through the Harcourts Foundation we are delighted to be partnering with such dedicated and inspirational sports people in supporting the causes that are dear to their hearts,” said Harcourts Real Estate CEO Richard Gray. “It is also our hope that the Riding for a Cause initiative will now be taken up at other equestrian events around the country and will continue at future SA showjumping championships.”

Top riders competing include Nicole Horwood who won the championship last year, Shaun Neill who won in 2012 and Jodi Pieters who won in 2011.

“This is SA’s premier showjumping event and offers spectators the opportunity to see the very best equestrian talent in SA in action,” said show director Sue Pieters.

“The course designer this year is the internationally-renowned Bernardo Costa Cabral from Portugal, and the Durban Shongweni Club has outstanding facilities for spectators and well as horses and riders so we are expecting a tremendous turnout, especially on Saturday which is Women’s Day and on Sunday for the finals, ” concluded Pieters.
