Company gives back to the community

Cement company paints Cliffdale school as part of their Day of Doing Good initiative around the province.

CEMENT company, NPC, painted Umthombomuhle Intermediate School in Cliffdale as part of their Day of Doing Good initiative around the province.

This is the international initiative of their group (the Camargo Correa Group) which is to encourage voluntarism among its employees and to focus on giving back to the communities.

The company also painted Cliffdale Primary School.

Principal of Umthombomuhle, Sbonelo Khumalo, said the school is grateful to NPC for painting their classrooms and toilets.

“We have 1000 pupils in the school and only 10 classrooms, we are overcrowded.

“We are always in need of sponsors as we have pupils from underprivileged families.

“Just recently, one of the pupils was hit by a bus as our feeding scheme kitchen is outside the school premises. We would love to get anyone who can sponsor us with materials to build the kitchen inside our premises.

Farouk Essop, project leader for the day said, their company NPC, facilitates the day, and their employees give their time and energy to helping others.

“The Day of Doing Good is celebrated worldwide by all companies within Camargo Correa. It’s a day focussed on stimulating and supporting professionals of Camargo Correa Group on volunteer work within their communities.

“This year more than 350 volunteers participated in South Africa,” he said.

Their projects ranged from painting, fixing, planting, building and others.

“The whole aim is to engage employees in volunteer work and giving back to the communities surrounding our plants.

In the North Coast, the Tongaat special needs school, a deserving organisation benefited from NPC’s Day of Doing Good.

“The company built storage facilities and donated pallets for groceries and linen as this was previously stored on the floor.

“They also supplied 25 desks for the children, who used to previously sit on the floor to do their work and sponsored them lunch on the day.

“It was a pleasure to be part of a winning team that did a fantastic job of preparing and accomplishing the project. The work done on this awesome day went to a very needy 128 pupils with special needs. The children and teachers were ecstatic with their gifts,” said Essop.
