
PINETOWN Magistrates Court convicted and sentenced a 37-year-old man to 35 years imprisonment on Monday 6 October. The accused was convicted and sentenced on two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault.
According to Captain Thulani Zwane, communications officer for SAPS, it is believed that between 2008 and 2011, victims between ages of six and eight years were sexually assaulted by the accused.
He would call the victims to visit his residence in New Germany and he would take them to a swimming pool where he repeatedly raped them. This would happen every time the victims visited his stepdaughter.
In another related incident the accused raped his stepdaughter and another victim both 13 years of age. Cases of rape and sexual assault were opened for investigation at Pinetown police station.
The Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and the man was arrested. He appeared in court on Monday and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for each count of rape (two counts) and five years each for three counts of sexual assault which added to a total of 35 years imprisonment.
he KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for the excellent investigation that led to the conviction and sentencing of the accused.
“This is testimony that we will leave no stone unturned and sends a strong message to criminals that their behaviour will not be tolerated,” she said.
