Pinetown’s all rounder wins top prize
Local lad, Ntokozo Qwabe's achievements set him above the rest and he was chosen as the overall winner for the SPAR Star of the Month competition.
NTOKOZO Qwabe, a pupil at John Wesley School in Pinetown, was the overall primary school winner for the SPAR Star of the Month competition.
For his numerous achievements, both in the classroom and on the sports field, he was given a SPAR hamper, an iPod and an iPad mini and his school received R10 000.
Guided by his faith in God and his strong sense of propriety, he has established himself as a leader of some repute at John Wesley School. His love for school life and his passion for sport are clearly evident as he animatedly explains how much he enjoys being a part of the John Wesley School family.
Ntokozo has been at the school since Grade R and a weekly border since Grade 5. He lives with his parents, grandmother, aunt and cousins in Mariannhill in Pinetown. His father is a minister in the Pinetown area and has always encouraged and inspired him to do well at school and to enjoy life to the fullest.
“Ntokozo exemplifies all of the qualities we as teachers endeavour to instil in children. He is hard-working, friendly, caring and humble. These qualities have earned him respect among his teachers and peers,” said deputy principal, Darron Tarr.
His class teacher, Leah Marais, said he is always willing to help and has a positive attitude towards his school work.
Ntokozo enjoys swimming, cross country, playing rugby, hockey, cricket and soccer at school. He is also a member of the school choir and, despite his passion for sport, still produces above average academic results.
“We are immensely proud to call Ntokozo one of our own,” said Tarr. “He is a gifted sportsman with exceptional footballing talent. His endeavours on the sports field are always characterised by determined effort and outstanding sportsmanship, making him an excellent ambassador for his school.”
When he’s not at school, Ntokozo is at the Mariannhill Soccer Club on a Saturday, he attends church on Sunday morning and plays soccer with his friends in the afternoon. He also dreams of one day becoming an actor or a professional soccer player.
Since he was chosen as the February SPAR Star of the Month and one of the quarterly winners, he has since been named as the school’s sportsman of the year, cricket player of the year and the boys’ hockey player of the year. His sporting career is ever growing as he was selected to represent the KZN soccer team and is one of three pupils from JWS who was awarded a sports scholarship to George Campbell High School next year.
