Solid foundation leads to six happy decades of marriage

THE adage, “It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home,” encapsulates the heart-warming story of two Cowies Hill realtors who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently.

Adrian (83) and Nola Ortlepp’s (79) love story began at a formal dance in Piet Retief just over six decades ago. Reminiscing about the moment when they first met, Adrian said he was attracted to Nola’s beauty. When he noticed her on the dance floor, he couldn’t resist asking her to join him for a dance.

The couple courted for a year before they wed. Held at the St John Anglican Church in Piet Retief, on 12 February, 1955, 150 guests gathered at the wedding to share the memorable day with the couple, despite the inclement weather.

The Ortlepps, who moved to Cowies Hill in 1968, have travelled to England, Australia, Greece, Italy and the adventurous pair plan to continue with their travelling.

Nola, who possesses a great interest in interior decorating, antiques and old buildings, said she admires Adrian’s loyalty and honesty. The couple have shared many memorable moments in the past 60 years, some of which include their business ventures and baking for Queen Elizabeth II in 1999 when she visited South Africa.

When asked about their upcoming plans, Nola said she was in the process of releasing a cookery book, which contains home remedies and recipes. The book, which was started by her aunt in 1934 is expected to be complete by the end of this year.

The Ortlepps are proud parents of three daughters and grandparents of four. They encourage family unity by hosting a dinner once a week for their family to get together and spend quality time with each other.

The Ortlepps said compromise was the key ingredient to their successful marriage. “Never harbour any resentment. Always sort out your argument as quickly as you can,” said the couple.

To celebrate their milestone, the couple enjoyed a dinner with family and friends.
