Ethelbert spreads rays of hope
Fifty families will now be able to receive hampers every month, which was made possible through the funding given to the Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre by Afrisun.
THE joy of 50 families has been reignited thanks to Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre, which used their recent sponsorship to combat poverty and assist households in Burlington Heights.
The Malvern-based organisation, which initiated the Burlington Upliftment Project a few years ago, applied for funding from Afrisun, which generously donated R180 000 to the Ethelbert home.
Director of the home, Vanessa Theophilus, said, “Through this funding, the 50 families that have been selected will receive hampers every month for one year. Each hamper is valued at R300 and contains sugar, rice, canned food and other grocery items. We partnered with Valencia Martin, a volunteer at Siyathuthuka who works closely with the residents in the Burlington Heights area. She assisted us to nominate the recipients of these hampers. This project will help to tackle the high levels of poverty in this area. It will also help to prevent children from being taken away from their families.”
