Local beauty competes in Commonwealth pageant

Athi Ntshingila is on a mission to win this year's Miss Teen Commonwealth Pageant.

KLOOF High School’s Athi Ntshingila has been selected as one of the top 50 semi-finalists in this year’s Miss Teen Commonwealth

Pageant. The ambitious Grade 11 pupil is now on a mission to win the competition, which opens new doors for young ambassadors.

The 17-year-old local beauty, who resides in Wyebank, Kloof, is determined to win the title, not just for herself but for her country.

Speaking to the Highway Mail about her recent achievement and future goals, Athi said, “It has always been my dream to enter this pageant, and my dream has finally come true. I’m thankful for this opportunity. If I do win the pageant, I will be required to help my country, my community and the people of South Africa. I plan on using my title to make a difference and inspire South Africans, and also assist charitable organisations that desperately require assistance.

“Some of my goals include winning the pageant, passing matric with five As, attending Wits University to study Commercial Law and major in Business. My key goal is to have a seat in the Constitutional Court, since only two women have seats in the highest court. My role model is Cyril Ramaphosa. I admire his contributions to our country and the economy.”

When asked what inspires her, Athi said, “We have come so far as a country and that inspires me. Disrespect for people’s race and culture also makes me more determined to make a difference. We are a rainbow nation; we need to unite and say no to discrimination. I am looking forward to participating in this competition. I would like to thank God, for I wouldn’t be here without Him, and my family, especially my dad, my sisters and my brother, Bheka, for their support.”

The contestants are required to gain sponsorships for the journey and they require an amount of R2 500 in cash donations. If more money is raised, above the set amount, those funds go directly to their chosen charity.

The grand finale takes place at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City on 12 September, and the winner will represent South Africa in the international pageant in London in November. All 53 Commonwealth member states send their representatives to compete for the prestigious titles. The title holders become involved in charitable causes and uphold the aims and objectives of the Commonwealth. These include racial harmony, poverty eradication and cultural cohesion.

This year the pageant will support chosen charities in local communities within the province. To support Athi’s journey, SMS her name and surname to 35554. Each SMS costs R3.
