Brooklyn’s business blossoms
Brooklyn Duthie was awarded two eco-hero awards for excellence in entrepreneurship and determination in recycling at Winston Park Primary School on Wednesday, 24 June.
YOUNG entrepreneur, Brooklyn Duthie, is making waves in the business world.
The Grade 4 pupil from Winston Park Primary School said she became an eco-monitor at her school during March this year. She decided to go on Pinterest and research how to make an all-purpose cleaner. During her research, she stumbled across various cleaning products and started experimenting with perfume and fragrances to create a completely natural product.
“I approached my family to come up with a name for my products, and my mum, Mandy, chose the perfect name – Nature’s Pulse – and I ran with it. I gave a few sample products to my family members to try out and they immediately fell in love with them,” said Brooklyn.
Brooklyn requested a small loan from her parents to form a budget and completely utilised it all in her business. She then approached a family friend to sponsor labels for her products temporarily until she could pay for that herself. To date she has paid off her loan and made a small profit through her business.
Her products include hand soap, room spray, all-purpose cleaner, window and glass cleaner and lip balm, which are retailing at Hillcrest KwikSPAR.
“It’s been an incredible learning curve for my daughter. She learnt to manage a budget, run a small business, approve costing to make a profit for her business, and all at 10 years old,” said Mandy.
Brooklyn said she really enjoys what she does. “Juggling school, after-school activities and running my small business is definitely a challenge but I refuse to give up my dreams. My advice to other young entrepreneurs is to stay focussed and never give up – anything is possible if you put your mind to it,” added Brooklyn.
Her goal is to keep her ingredients for her products as natural as possible and to be famous one day. Other than her passion for the environment, Brooklyn also enjoys singing, dancing and running.
