Elderly couple stabbed during home invasion

The suspects also stabbed the dog behind its ears.

AN elderly Cowies Hill couple and their dog were attacked by five men during a house robbery in the early hours of Friday, 25 September.

According to Blue Security’s spokesman, Brian Jackson, the armed men broken into the Cowies Hill property on Old Main Road at around 3.45am by forcing the driveway gate and burglar bars open.

Brian Jackson said the resident was alerted by his dog’s barking and was stabbed when he went outside to check.

“The robbers held the couple at up gunpoint and one of the men stabbed the resident in his hand, and his wife sustained injuries during the attack when she was hit with the handle of a gun on her head. The suspects also stabbed the dog behind its ears,” said Jackson.

After the robbers ransacked the house, they fled in the residents’ Isuzu bakkie with three laptops, cellphones and a plasma television.

Netcare paramedics treated the victims at the scene of the crime.

Jackson advised residents to install early warning systems on their properties, such as an electric fence connected to the house alarm and external beams in the garden.

“Having an early warning system reduces the element of surprise that criminals depend on and buys some time to go and hide in a ‘safe room’ on the property,” added Jackson.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Constable Phindile Radebe, confirmed that the attack took place and said a house robbery docket was opened at the Pinetown police station.

The Isuzu bakkie used as the getaway car was later recovered in KwaDabeka.

“The case has now been handed over to the Vehicle Inspectoral Services, which will dust the car for fingerprints,” said Constable Phindile Radebe.

No arrests have yet been made.
