Ronwyn is WFC’s powerhouse

Waterfall College's SPAR Star of the Month - April 2017.

WATERFALL College’s SPAR Star of the Month is Grade 11 learner, Ronwyn Jacob.

He recently qualified for the National Power Lifting Championships in Pretoria in June. This was due to his excellent results in the first official KZN qualifiers competition in April at Crossfit Shumba Gym where he successfully lifted a total of 365kg – a combination of 70kg bench press, 135kg squat and 160kg deadlift.

This is a remarkable achievement, as his target was a total of 212.5kg for his age category and weight category. If he achieves his goals at the nationals in June, Ronwyn has a further chance of qualifying for the international power lifting event in the Czech Republic.

When asked how he got involved with the sport, he said, “I started power lifting because I noticed I was always the stronger one in my peer group. I have never been focused on the aesthetic aspect of weight training. The sport has taught me self-discipline and knowledge about general health and wellness. When I realised my strength, I became motivated and realised I could set personal goals to achieve better results. I owe all my abilities to God, who awards me with strength.”

Ronwyn trains with the Highway Iron Club, under the tutelage of coach, Donovan Morris.

His parents, Angela and Anthony Jacob, said, “As parents we are extremely proud of Ron’s achievements. He is an inspiration and motivation to his friends. We know he has the ability to achieve success in diverse areas of his life.”

His favourite subject at school is physical science and he is also studying advanced mathematics and is excited to participate in the JSE Investment Challenge this year, a share-trading game which is offered as an extra-mural activity for interested learners.

Ronwyn also devotes some of his time to helping others in need at the gym where he trains. He helps both the elderly and youth with the use of equipment and rehabilitation. The teacher in charge of HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) at Waterfall College, Jayne Cansfield, said “As a committee member for HOPE, Ronwyn has shown a real heart for giving. He is such a dedicated member of our team and has played a key role in our outreach activities this year.”
