WESTVILLE Girls’ High School (WGHS) was proud of its 2017 Grade 12 learners who completed their schooling career against the backdrop of political and social upheaval, managing to sustain the school’s 100 per cent pass rate.
Principal, Catherine Raw, said: “Measured since 1994, this is no mean feat.
Statistical details released by the Department of National Education show 17 schools in KZN who have managed to maintain this record since 2013.
Only two schools on the list have more than 200 learners and 10 have under 50 learners, some as few as two or six learners.”
She said 215 learners obtained Bachelor passes (98 per cent of the learners) at WGHS and the rest of the Grade 12s (five learners) achieved diploma passes.
“The Grade 12 class of 2017 achieved 542 subject distinctions over a range of 15 subjects. WGHS only offer subjects approved at university level.”
Diyajal Ramraj achieved seven distinctions and was placed fourth in the district. She was placed 10th provincially.
“Congratulations go to Diyajal. Not only was she Dux of 2017, but she scored 100 per cent for physical science in the NSC examinations and scored more than 90 per cent for all her other subjects,” said Raw.
Kavisha Narainsamy was placed fifth in the District scoring more than 90 per cent for six of her seven subjects and 89 per cent for life orientation.
Hudaa Hoosen achieved 100 per cent in visual arts and distinctions in all her other subjects.
Twenty-one other learners achieved seven or more distinctions.
Congratulations to: Melissa Archibald, Yashthi Behari, Sizo Dlamini, Priyal Ganda, Parishka Govender, Juwairiyyah Hafferjee, Rebecca Lapin, Yasheera Lockhat, Bhavani Maharaj, Sandhya Maharaj, Tasmiyah Mahomed, Nontuthuko Maphumulo, Riyantha Moodley, Dominique Pau, Shilpa Persadh, Krithi Pillay, Calley Ramcharan, Nishoka Ramcharan, Diya Ramchuran, Enya Scharein, and Jesmika Singh.
Raw said it was pleasing to note that 36 learners achieved six or more distinctions.
“One of our Grade 12s of 2017 battled with her heath during the final NSC examinations writing one of her papers in hospital. She has one paper in English that she was unable to write in November 2017 but will write a supplementary examination in June 2018. Angelique Wheeler, despite her illness, passed all six subjects she completed and will obtain a Bachelor’s pass once her English is added to the results. We are proud of her determination to succeed in the face of great pain and adversity,” said Raw.
She added the success of the Grade 12s of 2017 is due to the combined efforts of passionate, well-qualified teachers, caring, supportive parents and dedicated, determined work on the part of the learners.
