Levi gears up for his next challenge
Thomas More College's SPAR Star of the Month - May 2018.
LEVI Smith, currently in Grade 2 at Thomas More College, is the primary school SPAR Star of the Month.
Levi started riding bicycles at the tender age of two and soon wanted to ride with his dad and brother in the 5km Compendium fun ride (on a JD Bug – no pedals). He started racing BMX for Giba BMX at the age of five and finished 4th in South Africa and 2nd in the KZN Championships in 2016.
He then went on to win the KZN Champs, National Age Group Series and placed 1st in the SA Champs in 2016 while racing for Lahee Park BMX. In 2017, Levi finished 2nd in the National Age Group Series, 4th in SA Champs and 2nd in KZN Champs.
“Levi not only has a love for BMX, but all things on two-wheels, having competed in a few MTB, Enduro and MX races where he was awarded podium positions,” said his proud dad, Robbie.
Besides his passion for riding, Levi also thoroughly enjoys soccer, rugby and cricket.
Robbie said, “Although Cycling South Africa does not select riders under the age of 10 as official Team South Africa riders, Levi will be competing in the U8 age group against children from all over the world at the 2018 BMX World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan in June. He hopes to meet American rider and Olympic gold medalist, Connor Fields.”
“Levi has put in numerous hours of training and is particularly focused and determined when it comes to race day. He hopes to represent South Africa at the BMX World Champs in Houston, Texas in 2020.”
