THOMAS More College’s high school SPAR Star of the Month is Gaby Greeff.
“I was blessed to find out about the President’s Award through my GP, Dr Richard Darby. I desire to be a doctor one day in order to give back. The President’s Award, which is endorsed by the Duke of Edinburgh, reflects this desire,” said Gaby.
Five tiers need to be fulfilled towards the President’s Award. With the community service tier, Gaby teamed up with the life support paramedics at the Amashova, volunteered with SPCA and walked many dogs. So far she has accumulated 150 hours of voluntary community service, currently made up in many varieties of services. “I can’t wait for the Comrades, as I will be in the medical tent,” said Gaby.
As part of the physical recreation tier, Gaby dances with Chelsea Blair and performed in a show at the Hillcrest Fun Fest. Gaby’s highlight to date was the Adventurous Journey in the Umgeni Valley, Howick, Karkloof Nature Reserve and Hilton College’s conservancy. “We are blessed to live in Natal to experience such beauty,” she said.
This is an 80km hike over four days while she carries her tent, bedding, food and gear on her back. “I was excited, yet unsure of what to expect. This trip showed me my internal power, strength and endurance and will help me in my chosen career.”
“Being humbled, to appreciate life’s finer pleasures like a warm bed and hot food. It is good to be reminded of and see what others endure almost on a daily basis,” said Gaby.
Gaby’s next task is to do the residential project, something she is really looking forward to. “If you want to stretch yourself and create opportunities, do the President’s Award,” said Gaby.
