Chess tourney boosts young minds
Seven schools participated in the tournament which is sponsored by the Beier Group of companies.
THE ninth annual Beier Chess in Schools Championship was held at the KK Community Hall in KwaDabeka recently.
The tournament covers seven schools in the KwaDabeka, Clermont, St Wendolins and Mariannridge areas and is sponsored by the Beier Group of companies, situated in Pinetown.
Children participating in the tournament were transported to the venue, given lunch, and the winning teams and individuals were awarded trophies for their efforts.
The Beier Group also provides the services of a full-time chess coach, Mbongeni Sithole, who works throughout the year giving chess lessons to children in the less-privileged schools.

Sithole also trains staff of the schools in the art of chess coaching, enhancing the sustainability of the initiative in the schools.
Hans Beier, who is the founder and champion of the programme, believes that chess is an extremely powerful tool in helping children develop a number of skills critical for today’s working environment.
“Playing chess in my youth certainly helped me to increase my problem solving abilities, as well as my strategic thinking and creativity.”
The winning teams were Bahlebonke Primary School from KwaSanti and Ilanga High School from KwaDabeka.
