Jade gains broader view of the world

St Benedict spent a year in America after being selected as American Field Service Exchange Student for 2017

BEING in America for just over a year taught a St Benedict Grade 11 learner to respect and be tolerant of different cultures, opinions and beliefs.

Jade Campbell was selected as an American Field Service Exchange Student for 2017 and is thankful to the school who offered her this incredible opportunity.

One of the main reasons Jade entered this exchange programme was her curiosity about other cultures and the American’s education system.

“I did not only get to learn about the American culture but many other different countries as there were learners from around the world who were part of this programme.”

Jade’s experiences were amazing and although she missed her family sometimes, her host family was loving, welcoming and she grew close to them. “I also made lots of friends,” she said.

This journey has made Jade want to travel more. During her time in the USA, she had an opportunity to teach people about South Africa as most thought Africa was one country.

Her many highlights included being able to travel freely using public transport such as buses and trains to and from school.

“I also loved the time I spent with my host family, I travelled with them and they taught me many things. I think skiing was probably my favourite.”

The humble Jade said from what she witnessed in the States, was the value of acceptance and embracing one another no matter what their cultural beliefs, religion and race are.
