KZN Craft Revolution ‘brews’ new opportunities for craft beer

All you need to do to begin your taste adventure is to keep a look out for the gold sticker on your craft beer bottles.

FOR many, there is nothing better than cracking open a cold one on a sweltering hot day.

Then there are those that don’t enjoy the taste of beer. Fear not, Warren Eades of the KZN Craft Revolution says with the wide range of locally made craft beers, there are flavours that will be sure to satisfy all non-beer loving taste buds.

The KZN Craft Revolution was brewed from the idea that it is difficult for local craft beer manufacturers to tackle the big corporates.

“This is not just the South African Breweries of the world, but also the large breweries that make up to 50 000 litres of craft beer at a time. For the local guys it is more of a craft and a labour of love,” said Warren Eades. “These guys are working hard each day to make an affordable beer but are unable to spend as much on marketing their beers.”

There are 24 breweries that are linked to the KZN Craft Revolution and there are more than 100 beers that bear the unique golden Proudly KZN Craft Beer sticker.

“The idea is that it shows the beer has been independently tested and approved. They are tested for flavours that aren’t meant to be in a beer. We are trying to make sure the quality in KZN is of a superior level. The main bonus is the fact that you can identify that it is locally produced beer. These guys are your neighbours, your friends. They are struggling in this economy like every other person and want to share their passion,” said Warren.

“It’s not just one brewer that you are supporting, it’s at least five employees per beer brand.

His own love for the craft started with a beer course three years ago. From the moment he tasted a few craft beers and the vast variety of flavours on offer, his interest quickly piqued.

“I always thought it was just a lager and there are so many types of craft. You can add grapefruit to your beer, there is orange peel in one – it’s a literal taste adventure!”

The Highway Mail met with Warren at the Nguni Brewing Co. in Westmead, a clinically clean warehouse that produces good, clean beer with the space needed to contract brew.

For those wanting to try some of the delicious treats the local brewers have to offer, visit the Hillcrest Tops as it stocks the widest selection of craft beer in South Africa. “We are actually quite blessed,” said Warren.

A beer to look out for when making your purchase is the 36 On Main as proceeds from the sale of this beer will be used to put an underprivileged student through the 1000 Hills Chef School.
