Durban City Orchestra seeks Musicians

The orchestra continues to give musicians in Durban a platform to play, socialise and grow together.

The second oldest symphony orchestra in South Africa, is looking for musicians with some classical music training (preferably at least Grade 6 Royal Schools of Music, Trinity college) that can read music.

They seeking musicians who can play any of the following: the French Horn, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Trumpet, Oboe or Bassoon.

The Durban City orchestra is a non-profit organisation, and uses funds earned from concerts for operational expenses and is made up of musicians from diverse backgrounds and provides a platform for amateurs, scholars, students and professionals to perform within an orchestral environment.

The orchestra’s repertoire combines the classical and symphonic genres with popular and contemporary styles, often incorporating instrumental and vocal soloists, as well as choirs.

They play in diverse venues and concerts in the past have included backing popular artists at the Botanic Gardens, playing classical concerts in churches, performing light classical concerts at old age homes, schools and other venues.

The orchestra currently consists of around 50 members of all ages.  Lyk Temmingh is the resident conductor and has had extensive experience in the field. They practice once a week at St Peter’s Lutheran church in Westville from 6:30-9PM
