HAZEL and Barry Tatton could not hide their excitement as they prepare to toast to 50 years of marriage on Friday, 7 August.

“We were just exploring the world. My friend’s girlfriend was Hazel’s friend so she convinced her to go to London. We were a group of four, so it actually became convenient for us to date,” smiled Barry.

“Besides we had a lot in common, we knew the same places and had mutual friends and acquaintances,” added Barry.

Barry and Hazel got married in Harare in 1970.

“I did not want a big wedding, there were only nine people including us and the pastor,” said Hazel.

Both have generous hearts as Hazel described her husband as a kind person who always goes the extra mile to help a person.

“We are very involved in church and my wife loves knitting and sewing. She is busy knitting clothes for premature babies.

“Hazel who mentioned that she loves music but cannot sing said when you are married you end up liking the same things. “Barry was a member of the Durban Men’s Choir for so many years,” she said.

They pointed out that as a married couple, you cannot just think about yourself only but have to take your partner into consideration all the time. “Marriage is a give and take,” added Barry.

The proud grandparents of four said they spend most of their afternoons looking after two of their grandchildren.”We are blessed to still have both our children staying in the Highway area,” said Hazel.
