The New Germany couple got married on 30 July 1970 in Welkom where they met.

“We did not have a white ceremony, we are both hippies so thought why not have a ‘hippie wedding,” said Jean.

Rob emigrated to South Africa after completing his studies at the Royal School of Mines in London in 1967, and started his working career in Welkom, Free State as a mining engineer. Jean had just joined the survey drawing office in Welkom, to begin her career in draughting.

After hours, Rob and his friend Dave spent time together yachting. The two were introduced by Dave’s girlfriend who worked with Jean.

Their friendship turned into a lasting one of 50 years. Rob said marriage is a work in progress and his wife surprises him all the time. “She keeps me on my toes and she is my best friend.”

Jean described her husband as the sweetest person.

Jean and Rob Charlton celebrate their golden anniversary.

“He has always been a gentleman and neatly dressed. Even when I first saw him, he was wearing a pink shirt, so that really attracted me to him. I liked his courage, in those days, men did not wear pink.

“He is also a very reliable guy and has never deserted us even with all his illnesses,” said Jean.

Rob has been fighting stage 4 cancer for the past eight years and said his wife has been his rock.Because of serious health problems, they had to take an early retirement.

“Settling here in Durban was a blessing. Life in this part of South Africa is pure joy when one has come from the dry flat gold mining city,” said Rob.

The monkeys, hills and vegetation are glorious for this couple, not to mention the sea and friendly people.

“We are content, thankful and grateful to be celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary,” said Jean.Rob and Jean have two children and no grandchildren.
