1st Malvern’s latest Springbok Scout on the road to success

For scouts in South Africa achieving the Springbok Scout Award is the culmination of many years spent in the scouting fraternity and lots of hard work.

BEING awarded the Springbok Scout award is the pinnacle of achievement for any scout in South Africa.

The completion of all requirements for the Springbok Award must occur before the applicant’s 18th birthday, with the exception of the final panel interview.

Travis Ricardo managed to successfully juggle his scouting and schooling this year navigating life during a pandemic, while preparing to write his matric finals.

Richardo (18) as part of his duty as a scout also spent time helping the younger members of the scout group, cubs, as a cub instructor. He himself made his way through 1st Malvern from cubs to scouts.

His plan is to find work as soon as possible and earn enough to travel to the UK and join the Royal Navy.

Queensburgh roads

1st Malvern Scout group scouter, Guy Caws, who has long been interested in the history of the roads in the greater Queensburgh area suggested Knightway Road would make a nice start to a regular Queensburgh News feature on the road names in the area.

Knightsway Road is named after Senator David Knight who acquired the property at 35 Coronation Road in 1917 and used the area to hold community events including fairs, circuses and sports events.
