Kayleigh continues to clock in kilometres

St Mary’s DSG, Kloof’s high school SPAR Star of the Month - July 2021.

ST Mary’s DSG, Kloof’s high school SPAR Star of the Month is Grade 10 Learner Kayleigh Lindeque.

Kayleigh’s interest in running started when she ran in the Inter-School and League Cross Country when she was in Grade 3.

“I fell in love with running and the freedom that running gives me, going to different venues and being out in nature,” said Kayleigh. “Park Run soon became my favourite Saturday morning activity.”

Kayleigh started training at Pacer at the end of Grade 3, where she was introduced to track and field. Kayleigh’s absolute favourite running events are sprints, especially the 400m and 200m.

In 2019, when Kayleigh was 14 years old, she was invited to the Salga games where she competed for the U18 girls’ team. She secured a win in the 400m event and her relay team came 1st. She also ran as a part of the cross country open girls’ team that came 3rd.

She has represented both St Mary’s and KZN for cross country and track and field events. At the moment, she has more time to do her second favourite running event, which is trail running.

Kayleigh regularly takes part in KZN trail running events and prefers to compete in the 5km trail runs. She recently did the Terra Firma 12km trail, and placed 1st and 7th overall in a field of 125 runners.

Kayleigh was also invited to compete in the Spar Grand Prix Women’s 10km race, where she would have run against a field of 125 elite ladies, of which only 15 juniors are included. Unfortunately this event was cancelled to current Covid-19 regulations. This however has not stopped Kayleigh from running and she will continue training. Her achievements are certainly something to be proud of.
