THE eThekwini Municipality has noted that commuters who make use of the Municipal People Mover Bus service will need to fork out an additional 50c per trip from September 1.
The City noted that this increase will affect the 150 000 people who make use of the service. The commuters will now pay R6 as opposed to the current R5.50 per trip. A report was tabled and approved at a full council meeting on August 5 and it was outlined that the increase is part of the contract.

“The contract stipulates that fares must be reviewed and increased annually, in keeping with inflation, to ensure operating services are maintained and to prevent under recovery of fare income by the bus operator,” said eThekwini Mayor, councillor Mxolisi Kaunda.
It was noted that the fare has not increased since the implementation of the People Mover in 2013.
“The Municipality has tried to ensure only a minimal increase is implemented,” said Kaunda.
