KLOOF High School’s SPAR Star of the Month is Grade 12 learner, Roston Smith.
Roston qualified for the third round of the South African Maths Olympiad. He has since competed in the final round and the team at Kloof High School said they are excited to find out his result.
He made the decision to participate in the Maths Olympiad after encouragement from his maths teacher, Suzanne Meyer.
“(She is) the best maths teacher I have had in my entire academic career and the person to whom I owe a great deal of appreciation for helping me unlock my true potential,” he said.
When Roston found out he had made it to the third round of the Maths Olympiad, he was overcome with excitement and pride as he was one of the few people to make it through to the third round.
He described the third round of questions as extremely difficult as they were like nothing he had seen before. “I had to really think on each of the questions, and was satisfied that I tried my best,” he smiled.
Roston loves the challenge, the patterns and logicality of it all. He is a very mathematical person and said it was satisfying to figure out a tough problem.
He plans to study Mechatronics at UCT next year and he has been conditionally accepted.
“Now it’s just a matter of maintaining and improving on my current academic results and acquiring some form of bursary or financial aid,” said the determined teen.
Kloof High School’s marketing manager, Tamaryn Van Wyk, said, “This is an incredible achievement as only the top 100 senior and top 100 junior learners are selected, out of thousands who took part across the country.”
