Molweni flood victims find their forever home

The Anglican Churches in the Archdeaconry of Pinetown helped in donating a home to a Molweni family who lost their home to the 2022 floods.

HOPE was brought back to the Sikhakhane family in lower Molweni, who lost their house during the 2022 floods, as they moved into their new home recently. Built in just over a year, the home was officially handed over to the family of six during the weekend.

The home was donated by the Anglican Churches in the Archdeaconry of Pinetown and through the support of the bishop, whose contribution of approximately R70 000 was instrumental in making this possible.

“With deep gratitude and immense joy, we announce the blessing and handover of a new home to the Sikhakhane family, who endured unimaginable hardship and loss when their previous home was destroyed during the devastating April 2022 floods.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to Mam’ Rejoice Ngcongo, whose efforts in contacting Umpheme Development secured the donation of paint and 1 920 sandbags for the retaining walls. Our gratitude also goes to Mrs Thembi Zondi, a valued member of this community, for her kind contribution of 80 additional sandbags,” stated the church.

According to the church organisation, this project was also made possible by the generosity and various contributions from countless individuals whose support allowed them to raise approximately R200 000 towards this endeavour.

Extending their gratitude, Nokuphila Sikhakhane, who lives with her children and her siblings, said they are thankful to the Anglican Churches in the Archdeaconry of Pinetown.

“Our dignity has been restored. Things have never been the same since we lost our home – we have been renting. Finally having a place to call home is a blessing, and we will forever be grateful,” she said.

The church said this new home for the Sikhakhane family serves as an important reminder of the transformative impact we can have when we come together as a community of faith, united in our shared belief in compassion, generosity and the inherent dignity of all people.
