Hillcrest chiropractor conquers the Knysna Extreme Triathlon

Dr Neil Cuninghame tells his story about how he conquered the Knysna Extreme Triathlon.

AS a chiropractor specialising in pain management, Dr Neil Cuninghame has dedicated his career to helping others overcome physical challenges. Beyond this, Dr Cuninghame’s latest achievement showcases his own impressive endurance. Dr Cuninghame recently completed the Knysna Extreme Triathlon, considered the toughest triathlon in Africa.

Reflecting on this achievement, Dr Cuninghame said his journey to becoming a triathlete began with a wake-up call. “I was quite overweight and found myself out of breath while treating patients,” he said.

This realisation inspired his transformation, and he started exercising again. Joining a local Couch to 10km programme, he gradually improved his fitness, losing 15kg in the process.

His first Half Ironman in East London in 2019 marked the beginning of his triathlon journey. Since then, he has participated in several Half Ironman races, mountain-biking events and running competitions, including the 230km Trans Baviaans and the 250km Sani2C non-stop.

The Knysna Extreme Triathlon is part of a global series of five ultra-triathlons. The event consists of a 5km swim, a 174km cycle and a 50km run, with a 19-hour cut-off. Dr Cuninghame describes the experience as ‘breathtakingly challenging’.

Completing the Knysna Extreme Triathlon is a testament to Dr Cuninghame’s dedication and perseverance. He acknowledges the crucial role his support system played in his success.

“Finishing this race with my parents and wife by my side made it all the more meaningful,” he said.

The Hillcrest resident is already looking forward to his next challenge. He and his wife are training for the Two Oceans Marathon, and he plans to refocus on preparing for the Knysna Extreme again next year.
