Curro Hillcrest learner joins Antarctica Expedition with Riaan Manser

L’chelle Bester was among Africa's top five learners selected to explore Antarctica and learn about its ecosystem during the December holidays.

CURRO Hillcrest learner L’chelle Bester spent part of her school holidays on the Students in Antarctica expedition with renowned explorer Riaan Manser.

Bester was one of five learners across Africa selected for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. The competition invites eco-minded young people to submit a video showcasing an environmental sustainability project they are working on. From these entries, the top 20 are shortlisted, the top 10 finalists announced, and ultimately, the top five are chosen to join Manser on his annual expedition.

Bester’s winning presentation highlighted an app she is developing for her school, designed to help learners log their community service hours while inspiring them to see the positive environmental impact of their efforts. Her dream is to create a beach-cleaning robot that targets microplastics, blending technology and innovation to combat climate change.

The expedition aimed to teach the top five learners about the vital role Antarctica plays as an ecosystem and its global environmental impact.

Bester shared her excitement about the journey, saying, “Not only was it the experience of a lifetime, but I believe a trip like this is something you can’t return the same from. That’s what I’m seeking – growth.”

The five learners were selected for demonstrating key qualities, including authenticity, analytical thinking, a willingness to learn, a deep love for their communities, practical approaches to creating change in their surroundings, and optimism for making a positive impact.
