Thrifting community on a steady growth

Thrifters in the Upper Highway Mail join forces to grow their community.

THRIFTERS were spoiled for choice at the recent Highway Thrifted and Vintage style boutique. Hosted at the Kloof community hall on Saturday, January 25, the growing community is the brainchild of Sanja Hanekom whose aim was to bring together community members who collect second-hand clothing and crafted and upcycled items.

The aim of the market was to put second-hand items into good use and share it with people who need them more.

“Instead of these things ending up in the dump site, they can just sell them to people who might need them and put them to good use.

“Our market experienced significant growth last year, hosting 11 pop-up market events and over 30 one-day retail pop-up shops, which attracted a large and dedicated following. What’s even more encouraging is that we’ve seen others following our lead, incorporating elements of sustainability into their events. The preloved movement has witnessed incredible growth, and we’re proud to have played a part in it,” she said.

The market started with a few members, and has grown as more people joined in.

“This year, we’re excited to take our market to the next level. We’re currently based at the Kloof Civic Hall, which has been a great venue for us, but it’s in need of some TLC. We’re exploring ways to renovate and upgrade the space, and we’re hoping to secure a long-term commitment to make it our permanent home. We’re also looking to partner with like-minded businesses and organizations to help us spread the word about the importance of sustainability and community-driven initiatives,” she said.

Hanekom said their ultimate goal is to create a thriving platform that brings people together, supports local businesses and charities, and inspires positive change in our community.
