Keep Westville Beautiful introduces new champion for a cleaner community

Keep Westville Beautiful has extended their efforts to clean the area by introducing a new member who will be teaching community members about the importance of keeping the area clean.

IN a bid to tackle littering and promote environmental awareness, Keep Westville Beautiful (KWB) has introduced Binny the Mongoose, a character designed to educate both young and old on the importance of keeping the community and the rest of South Africa clean.

KWB is looking to bring Binny to life through a custom mascot costume, enabling him to visit schools and community events to spread his message in an interactive way. The organisation is calling on skilled community members who may be able to help create the costume.

Liesel Kruger of the KWB said the idea for Binny came from the realisation that education around littering is lacking.
“A common misconception is that littering creates jobs, but in reality, it damages the environment and stifles economic growth. Clean areas attract businesses, which in turn generate employment opportunities. Binny was created to help drive this message home in an engaging and relatable way,” she said.

Kruger added that Binny embodies the hope of a cleaner and more prosperous South Africa.
“Through his character, KWB aims to shift perceptions about littering and inspire the community to take pride in their surroundings. Binny serves as a friendly and engaging mascot for litter prevention, especially among children. By making the message more relatable, KWB hopes to instil lifelong habits of cleanliness and environmental responsibility from a young age,” she said.

Additionally, KWB plans to expand Binny’s presence through posters, banners, and branded bins to further promote his mission across Westville and beyond. They are also open to sharing Binny with other organisations that support the cause of environmental conservation.

•     Volunteering – assisting with staff co-ordination, admin, advertising, fundraising, and educational initiatives.
•     Donating – contributing financially to help sustain and grow the campaign.
