Mariannridge teenager represents hometown on national pageant stage

Zama Bhengu says pageantry has taught her valuable lessons on community outreach.

MARIANNRIDGE’S own Zama Bhengu, 13, is making waves in the beauty pageant world by proudly representing her hometown on stages across the country.

Her journey into pageantry began in 2022, where she was introduced to community service. Now she is set to compete in the Miss Pre-Teen Universe finals in Polokwane, Limpopo, from March 21-23.

“I entered Miss Teen Universe South Africa last year because I wanted to be part of a recognised national pageant that focuses on girl-child empowerment,” she shared.

Zama says her journey from semi-finalist to finalist has taught her valuable lessons about giving back to her community. “As part of my journey, I have donated school shoes to children in need in Mariannridge, visited foster homes where I donated clothes and school shoes, and organised a charity drive where I made sandwiches for homeless people and job seekers using my savings and funds raised through events.”

Beyond her charity work, she is also breaking stereotypes in the pageant industry, inspiring plus-size girls and women to embrace their confidence.
“I’ve encouraged many young and older plus-size girls to step into modeling and pageantry and to be confident in their bodies and abilities.”

As Zama prepares for the finals in Polokwane, she is calling on her community for support. “I would really appreciate donations and sponsorships to help me get to the finals. The trip, including accommodation and transport, costs R5 000, and I would be grateful for any contribution, even as little as R50.”
For donations, supporters can contact her father, Thabani Bhengu, at 072 528 1683.

Zama extended her heartfelt thanks to her biggest supporter. “Last but not least, I want to thank God and my dad, Thabani Bhengu, who has been by my side from day one. I love you, dad — and to my angel in heaven, mom, I know you’re watching over me.”
